Be Strong and Courageous: A New Year with God

 Sermon: by Ouma Patrick

:Be Strong and Courageous: A New Year with God

Scripture Reference: Joshua 1:9 – "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Introduction:

The beginning of a new year is like stepping into uncharted territory. We are faced with new opportunities, challenges, and uncertainties. Just as Joshua stood at the edge of the Promised Land, called to lead Israel into a new season, we too are called to move forward into this year with faith, strength, and courage.

Today, let us reflect on God’s command to Joshua and how it applies to us as we step into this new chapter.

1. God’s Command to Be Strong and Courageous

“Have I not commanded you?”

This is not a suggestion or a polite encouragement; it’s a command.

God calls us to display strength and courage in the face of the unknown.

Strength comes from reliance on God, not from our own capabilities.

Application:

Identify areas in your life where you need to step out with strength and courage.

Trust God’s ability to work through you, even when you feel inadequate.

2. Overcoming Fear and Discouragement

“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Fear and discouragement are natural when facing uncertainty or remembering past failures.

These emotions are not from God—He gives us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

How to Overcome Fear:

1. Meditate on God’s Word (Joshua 1:8): Saturate your mind with His promises.

2. Pray Without Ceasing: Prayer aligns your heart with God’s strength and guidance.

3. Remember God’s Faithfulness: Reflect on His past works in your life.

3. The Assurance of God’s Presence

“For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

God’s presence is the foundation of our confidence.

Just as He was with Moses and Joshua, He is with us in every step we take this year.

This promise reminds us that we are never alone in our challenges.

Application:

In moments of doubt, remind yourself of God’s unchanging presence.

Seek His presence daily through prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers.

4. Taking Action in Faith

Joshua had to act on God’s command—to lead, to step into the Jordan River, and to claim the Promised Land. Similarly, we must act in faith, trusting God to guide and provide.

Steps to Take in Faith:

Set God-centered goals for the year.

Take small, consistent steps toward what God has called you to do.

Trust God even when the outcome is uncertain.

Illustration: David Faces Goliath

The story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) is a powerful illustration of courage rooted in faith.

David, a young shepherd, faced a giant warrior, Goliath, who terrified the entire Israelite army. While others were paralyzed by fear, David stepped forward with courage, saying:

"The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine." (1 Samuel 17:37)

Armed with just a sling and five smooth stones, David confronted Goliath, declaring:

"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." (1 Samuel 17:45)

David’s victory over Goliath was not due to his own strength but because he trusted fully in God’s power and presence.

Lesson for Us:

Like David, we may face “giants” this year—challenges that seem insurmountable. But with God by our side, we can step forward in courage, knowing that the battle belongs to the Lord.

Practical Takeaways:

1. Memorize Joshua 1:9 as a reminder of God’s promise and command.

2. Reflect on areas where you need to trust God more deeply this year.

3. Commit to daily practices that strengthen your faith—prayer, Bible study, and worship.

4. Encourage one another to live boldly in faith and obedience

Conclusion:

As we step into this new year, God’s message to us is clear:

Be strong and courageous.

Do not be afraid or discouraged.

Trust in His unshakable presence.

Just as God led Joshua and David to victory, He will lead us into a year filled with His plans and purposes. Let us embrace the year ahead with faith, strength, and courage, knowing that the Lord our God is with us wherever we go.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your promises and Your presence. As we begin this new year, help us to be strong and courageous, trusting in You completely. Remove fear and discouragement from our hearts and fill us with faith, hope, and determination to live for Your glory. Guide us in every step we take, and let this year be one of growth, purpose, and victory In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today, I want to encourage you with a powerful message: "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets again." Many of us may have experienced setbacks last year. Perhaps you’ve worked hard, prayed, and believed, but you didn’t see the results you hoped for. You might feel like giving up or playing it safe this year. But just as Jesus instructed Peter to launch his net again after a night of failure, God is calling you to step out in faith this year. Main Points 1. Obeying God’s Word in Uncertainty Jesus told Peter, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." Peter’s immediate response was one of honesty: "Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything....

"From Empty Nets to Overflowing Blessings: The Power of Deep Faith"

Sermon by Ouma Patrick  Scripture Reference: Luke 5:4-6 (NIV) "When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.' Simon answered, 'Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.' When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break." Introduction Many of us live in the comfort of the shallow waters—safe, predictable, and controlled. But God calls us to go deeper in faith, in obedience, and in trust. "The Divine Structure: Understanding the Setup of God's Household"

Sermon by Ouma Patrick  The setup of the household of God refers to the structure, organization, and function of the church as described in the Bible. This divine household operates under clear principles, with Christ as its head, and the community of believers acting in harmony to fulfill God's purpose. Let’s look at the key components of the setup: 1. Christ as the Head The most important aspect of the household of God is the acknowledgment that Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 5:23, Colossians 1:18). He is the supreme authority, guiding the direction and purpose of His people. Everything in the household of God centers around Christ, His teachings, and His example of servanthood. 2. The Role of Spiritual Leadership In the New Testament, various roles are established within the church to ensure proper functioning. Key roles include: Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers: These were instituted for equipping the saints for ministry and building up ...
